At an elevation of 5,600 feet, Prescott offers a much cooler climate during the hot summer months than Phoenix or even Sedona. For families with young children or hikers who prefer a scenic but less strenuous day hike, there are several trails near Prescott that are only a few miles from downtown. One hiking trail that is particularly beautiful is located in the
Granite Basin Lake Recreation area.
Located about 8 miles from downtown, it offers Granite Mountain Trail #261 and the Clark Spring Trail #40, both of which begin near the campground. The Cayuse Equestrian Trailhead on the North side of Granite Mountain also provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the experience the Prescott Area on horseback.
